As you know, a few of the characters in the old headless horseman tale were based on real people, so I’m curious to find out if the Sleepy Hollow of Mr. Irving’s time is as bewitching as he described it in his writings. Authors tend to write what they know, so I now find myself sitting under the cloak of darkness, hidden by a large tree, so I can see if this headless horseman does in fact ride at midnight. As I wait, I’m enjoying the scent of the fall forest blending with a bonfire off in the distance, which makes this sleepy hollow rather magical. Scent History

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow was a short story written by Washington Irving in 1820. It follows schoolteacher, Ichabod Crane, who disappears from Sleepy Hollow after a possible encounter with The Headless Horsemen. However, the town of Sleep Hollow was established by Dutch settlers in the 1600’s, and they named the area Slapershaven (Sleepers Haven). In the late 19th century the town was incorporated as Tarrytown, but in 1996 North Tarrytown officially changed the name back to Sleepy Hallow.
