I’ve been thoroughly enjoying your Halloween film recommendations, and one was so delightful I couldn’t help traveling back to 1990’s Salem. Not to worry, I didn’t dare attempt to light any black flame candles. However, I did pass out candy – only the good stuff, of course, and even wore a witch’s hate while doing it. My darling hosts were also kind enough to let me help toasting pumpkin, which filled their home with the most wonderful aroma. I am officially quite the fan of Halloween.
Yours truly,
A

Scent History
All Hallows’ Eve was originally the Celtic festival Samhain, meaning ‘summer’s end’. It’s believed that the veil between the living and the dead is thinnest during this time, so the dead can return to the living world to visit their homes and loved ones.
Archaeologists have located sites in Ireland where Samhain was celebrated, most notable is the Hill of the Ward, where bonfires were lit to start the festivities.
When the Romans conquered the Celts, they merged their festival of Feralia with Samhain, which eventually became the holiday we know – Halloween.
The early American colonists didn’t celebrate All Hallows’ Eve, it wasn’t until the Irish immigrants came to the United States, and brought their traditions with them creating the popular holiday we celebrate today.
